Hi there,
This issue's tip: the 10-minute photo walk
After you've cleaned the old place and before you hand back the keys, walk through every room with your phone and record a slow video. Open the fridge, the oven, the cabinets and the closets. Say the date out loud at the start.
If there's ever a disagreement about deductions, that video is your best evidence. More in Get your security deposit back.
Watch for: lookalike change-of-address sites
Some websites that look official charge much more to forward your mail. The official USPS service online charges only a small identity verification fee. Go to usps.com directly rather than clicking an ad. See Change your address the right way.
Reader question
"A mover gave me a great price over the phone and wants a big deposit. Is that normal?" Be careful. Reputable movers usually base estimates on a walk-through or video survey of your things, and don't ask for large cash deposits. For interstate moves, check their USDOT number on FMCSA's Protect Your Move site. See Moving quotes and scams.
Here's to an easy move,
