Moving cost calculator: truck or movers?
Put your own quotes in. The calculator adds the costs people forget, like mileage, fuel, damage protection and helpers, and compares the total with a moving company's written estimate. The starting numbers are only examples. Nothing is stored.
Doing it yourself saves about
$901
- DIY total
- $759
- Movers total
- $1,660
- Truck and protection
- $290
- Fuel
- $48
- Helpers
- $300
- Supplies
- $120
Adds 15% to the distance for pickup, return and detours, and assumes you'd still buy about half the supplies with movers. Your time off work and the risk of injury aren't included, and they matter.
Before you trust any quote
- Get mover estimates in writing, based on a walk-through or video survey.
- For interstate moves, check the mover's USDOT number on FMCSA's Protect Your Move site.
- Be wary of large cash deposits and phone quotes that seem far lower than the rest.
