Renting a moving truck: what to check
Size, mileage, fuel and damage protection.
A truck rental quote often doesn't include everything. Knowing what to ask avoids surprises at drop-off.
Before you book
- Pick the right size; a second trip often costs more than a bigger truck
- Ask about mileage charges and included miles
- Check the fuel policy: you usually return it at the same level
- Ask what your own auto insurance or credit card covers, and what the rental company's protection costs
- Ask about drop-off fees for one-way rentals
At pickup
- Walk around the truck and photograph any damage
- Note the fuel level and mileage
- Ask how the loading ramp and any trailer hitch work
Driving
Trucks are taller, wider and slower to stop. Watch for low bridges and drive-through overhangs, and avoid backing up without a spotter.
