Protecting your things during a move

Released value vs full value protection, explained.

5 min read

If something breaks during a move, what you get back depends on the protection you chose. For interstate moves, there are two main options.

Two options for interstate moves

  • Released value: included at no extra charge, but pays only a small amount per pound per item, far less than most things are worth
  • Full value protection: costs more, and the mover must repair, replace or pay the current value of lost or damaged items, subject to the terms

Also check

  • Whether your renters or homeowners insurance covers belongings in transit
  • What the mover's contract says about items you pack yourself
  • Keep valuables, documents and medications with you

If something is damaged

Note it on the delivery paperwork, take photos, and file a written claim with the mover promptly. Keep copies of everything.
