DIY truck or hire movers?

Compare the full cost, not just the truck rental price.

6 min read

Renting a truck usually looks cheaper. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't once you add mileage, fuel, helpers and time off work. Here's how to compare fairly.

DIY costs to count

  • Daily rental rate and mileage charges
  • Fuel: trucks use far more than cars
  • Damage protection offered by the rental company
  • Equipment: dolly, furniture pads, straps
  • Helpers, food and thank-you money
  • Time off work and your back

Middle options

  • Moving containers you pack and they drive
  • Hourly labor-only help to load and unload your rental truck
  • Freight-style services where you share space on a trailer

Hiring movers

Get at least three written estimates based on a walk-through or video survey. Ask what's included: packing, stairs, long carries, fuel and insurance.
