Your first month's budget in a new home

New bills, new prices and the things you forgot to pack.

5 min read

The first month after a move is when budgets break. New bills start, prices may be different, and small purchases pile up.

Expect

  • A first full grocery shop to restock the basics
  • Small household purchases: hooks, shower curtain, bulbs
  • Different utility costs in a new home or climate
  • New commute costs

Keep it in check

  1. Live out of boxes for a week before buying anything
  2. Keep a list of "needs" and buy them in one trip
  3. Compare new bills against your old ones after the first month
  4. Rebuild your budget around the new numbers
